Choosing the Best Fonts for Email: What Works and What Doesn't

Font selection matters more than you might think. Choosing the right font for your email campaigns is essential for readability and engagement.

Font choice might seem like a minor detail in the context of email marketing, but it has a measurable impact on how your emails are received, read, and acted upon. The wrong font can make your message feel amateurish, difficult to read, or — in the worst case — completely broken for large portions of your audience.

Web-safe fonts remain the safest choice for email campaigns. Fonts like Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Times New Roman, Georgia, and Courier New are available on virtually every device and email client, ensuring your message looks as intended regardless of where it's opened. For agencies wanting a more contemporary look, web fonts like Roboto, Open Sans, and Merriweather can be used — but always with a web-safe fallback defined, since support varies significantly across email clients.

The golden rule is consistency and fallback planning. Design your email to look great with your preferred web font, but ensure it's still clean and readable with the fallback. Test across Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and mobile before sending, and remember that on Outlook particularly, web font support remains limited. Keep font sizes generous — 14px minimum for body text — and stick to two fonts at most across any single email.
